Well...
- the concept
- the graphic style
- the ship manage system
- combat mecanics with the addition that you can move to affect weapons and sensors range

it would need some change, like those I have proposed, to fit in a mmo.
it's just an idea for a space-exploration mmo
well...maybe you're right, but this is the only game i have seen since now that permit you to manage the ship inside more than piloting it.
The "moving where you want" thing is just to bring you in range for attack.

Single player game are limited, when you finish it...it's finished, you can play again but it's still the same, the IA is still the same. A MMO where you play with and versus other players is unpredictable and you can keep playing forever...like ultima online.

Forgive the heresy, but Ultima Online is a bit like the MMO version of Diablo.if it were not for diablo 2 and 3 no one will play diablo now, but ultima is still played.

"sector-based" is just not realistic...if in the reality we'd have space ships we could go where we want, not limited by sector or something, where you jump in and find other spaceships just because this sector-based universe is discrete.
The univers is not discrete, you could jump where you want, and likely you will not find noone, becouse the universe is a vast and empty place.

Hull point's is just not realistic, if you keep shooting a wall point, you'll get a hole but the entire wall still standing. Only if you hole it in more points it may fall.
Have you tried Star Trek Online, or EVE?
Both are focused on controlling the outside of the ship, you are the pilot and directly drive the ship, targeting and auto fire at enemy.
You can't manage the ship like in FTL.
In the game i describe you would be the commander and instruct your crew.

The game dos'nt have to be realistic, personally I think having the single player updated once in a while and adding in more fun/awesome stuff into single player is better then removing it altogether and adding multiplayer.

I don't think it will happen due to the fact that it was made to be a rougelike, and the developers seem to be very happy with it staying that way. So hoping for it will likely change nothing. Just like people screaming for online play for Cortex command: Its just not happening.

Now would a FTL-like game make a good multiplayer game? Oh yes. Which means if you want it you may have to get to work yourself.

to get to work yourself
well, i'm a programmer, but i'm not really able to write a game, so i hope someone will read my idea, like it, and make this great game.

I only hope that no one will say : "this is FTL, you can't use it".

Be smart, and mention its inspired by it, use your own unique graphical style and weapons, and some new game-play mechanics and then you likely will get no gruff. Or keep it non-profit and you can get away with basically anything.
