I never rename stuff.

The ships, no particular reason, I just like keeping them the default names.

As for crew: naming them manually ruins the inevitable chuckles when you're given an ELNUBNUB. ;)

I usually name my guys with kind of silly things, that sort of fit the theme of their race in my mind.
  • Humans: Stereotypically bland names, like John, Jane, Smith, etc.
  • Engi: ALL-CAPS first-name type names. Robots need simple names, and they don't have lower-case, amirite?
  • Mantis: I try to go with lots of Ks and Zs, to fit with their influence from stuff like the aliens in District 9. Plus, KazaaakplethKilik is precedent, right?
  • Rockmen: Either "tough guy" names, like Blake, or Rocky; or else stuff like Granite, Feldspar, or whatever.
  • Zoltan: In my current game, I started using battery manufacturers/brand names. I can only think of Duracell and Energizer. Maybe I'll start using flowery, stereotypical "hippie" names, to fit their crystal energy theme. :P
  • Slugs: Especially with the new crew colours, and the rename-in-mid-game option, I've really started enjoying naming these dudes. Stuff like Snot, Pus, and Bile.
  • Crystal: Stuff like Sapphire, Aquamarine, etc.
  • Lanius: I wanted to name these guys with punctuation, to fit with the "silent" or "doesn't understand common language" theme that is given in the events and flavour-text, but the game only allows numbers and letters. So I name them with roman numerals. Makes them feel old, like I imagine their species to be, hibernating in deep space.

I usually change crew names to reflect what system i want to put them on.
i try to be more creative than just "engines" or "pilot"

i might do something like naming the engines guy "speedy", the shield guy "guardian" and the weapons guy "kickass" or "Bullet" or something like that.

i like to use heavy metal related names too.

so like, i will usually name my boarders "slayer" and "deth" (as in megadeth or dethklok), usually mantises, if i have 2 rockmen as my boarders I will sometimes call one "Rocket" and the other one "Punch" as in "Rocket Punch" a silly move lots of japanese anime characters use

my pilot is always named "Femaiden" (my username, also a play on Iron Maiden)

"guardian" is a play on blind guardian.
i sometimes use the name "icedfate" a play on iced earth and Mercyful Fate, theres no contextual connection to any system or role with that one i usually save that one for the guy i put on doors or sensors but i will sometimes name the zoltan icedfate even though i almost always put him on shields because i like save "guardian" for a rockman i'll also sometimes name the rockman "Heavy" or "DethRock"

don't judge me but i have a tendency to sometimes use dirty words...especially for the federation ship which looks like a certain part of the body. and might name it something like "Blaster" but i will put a 4 letter word that starts with J before it.
i like to give engies BDSM names like "gimp" or "slave" or "sub"
I sometimes compare the engi ship which looks like a hole to another part of the anatomy and will give it a name like "holiest of holies" or "Va Jay Jay".

the new Lanius are made of metal i believe, so i use metal names for them...i might name their ship Metallica or Metalium.

the crystal ship i always call it "Diamond Head" after the original band that wrote "Am I evil" before Metallica started using it...

the slugs might be "The Cradle of Filth".
the mantis ship will be "The Impaler" or "The Slayer"

i call the stealth ship "The Walken" that would make no sense to anyone except me or anyone that has seen a series of youtube videos called the dungeons and dragons PSAs as they have a character named "invisible Christopher Walken" that is essentially someone doing an impression of christopher walken and hes supposed to be invisible, he is the secret end boss of dungeons and dragons, the tarrasque is his familiar, you take the stats of a regular invisible stalker and multiply its stats by an ungodly number and those are his stats, when he strikes, you roll every dice that you own and everyone at the table takes that much damage, even the dungeon master.

I name the pilot "chris" and the weapons guy "Dice", one of the other guys gets named "Tarrasque" but theres an 8 character limit so i shorten it to "Tarasque"

p.s. the new advanced edition has a button to svae crew stations and then send them right back, so that removes much of my need to name my guys. i mainly gave them names to help me remember what their role was, its no longer necessary but i like to see the names when i play especially when i have to restart 5 or 6 times to finally get a winning run...

Happy to read some other naming silliness from others.

To the Ferrous Maiden: I think you'd like Star Control's Syreen Penetrator ship: http://wiki.uqm.stack.nl/File:Star_cont ... tabank.png
Also, now that renaming is an option, my Rock B's run to unlock Rock C was named the Powerchord', featuring Mustaine, Ozzy, Hetfield (yes, he serves happily together with Dave), Weiland (it just makes sense to have a Weiland Rockman at the helm, no?), etc. The crew were 4 Rockmen and 4 Mantises, too, to make boarders feel welcome.
Zoltan B were named Artin, Banach, Klein, Hausdorff, etc.
Back in Vanilla, another naming convention I had was to always put a human female on the engines (because you can't take the skies from me!).

So far for the new ships we have Charybdis to go with Scylla (Fed B and C), Zoltan C is the 'Warmest Colour' (hopefully some of these references aren't too obscure; everyone get names like 'No Soap Ether'?) and Kestrel/Human C is 'Spitfire', though really it should be named the 'Celine Dione', considering it the blandest and most uninteresting of the new ships. Lanius A is the 'Exhale'.
