Is the captain part of the crew?

Post by Capt. Moss »

Ok, so I know this may seem stupid, but does the player count as a member of the crew or no? During the game it seems like your the captain with 8 member under your command, but I wanted to be sure first. I wanted to try and write a story about FTL, and if this is the case it allows for greater range. Thank you in advance if anyone answers this.

There are two theories about the Captain. The first theory is that you're an AI who controls and manages the crew. The other is that one of the crew is the Captain. If they die, another takes on the role and the mission, etc, etc.

Thank you for the responses, I think I will be following the idea that you are a human captain aboard the ship, based on the points given in the link.

That second theory is basically how Crusader Kings works, when your main character dies you get another, and another, and another. I don't know if there's a word for it, but the protagonist constantly changes as stuff occurs. I buy into that more than I buy into the advanced AI though.

I guess it's mostly up to how the player wants to interpret it though. The Captain could also be an unlisted crew member (Since he's the one who bosses everyone around), who operates from a non-listed "bridge" facility. Of course that brings with its own set of problems.
This is no easy mission...

BUT YOU SON. YOU WERE BORN FOR IT.

The clone bay poses a problem for the second theory, though: Assuming that the theory is true, you shouldn't be able to control any aspect of the ship while the entire crew is dead and waiting to be cloned, but only after at least one crewmember has been cloned. So at least under these (admittedly very special) circumstances, you are definitely acting as an AI, rather than controlling the Captain.

I think the captain is a member of the crew. That's why if your crew all die, you lose the game. If you have a clone bay and they all die, and it is online, they can gradually come back to life. But if they all die and you have a broken clone bay and backup DNA banks and an offline system repair drone, you lose the game. Were the captain apart from the crew, he could order the repair drone online and have it repair the clone bay, then online the clone bay to revive the crew.
