First time I have ever seen only one path from the start to the exit. Had a stealth ship with no shields so I tried to avoid the asteroids.

Yeah - tough map layout. Stealth ship have pretty good starting engines so powering FTL up takes little time - ou can still break through rebels and play on.The most probable path is shortest between beacons - in other words it was 99% chance south part of the map is isolated.

First time I encountered a dead fork like that most of the maps forked and came together at the end. I figured I might be able to jump in time and skip back the way I came but the rebel ships were deap in the red and pounded me to hard I only managed to get to 60% charge before my engines where hit and then I swiftly died.

And so a lesson has been learned.

I'd imagine now you'll do better at estimating distances.

I really wish there was a better indicator of what your next jump/s connect you to. I have bet my life on it being just close enough on a number of occasions though this is the only time it has screwed me this badly.

Over time you learn how to gauge the distances better, if the game told you that you could go that way then where is the exploratory fun

It happens, though mostly just once in a while. At least you were playing a likely doomed ship regardless

I use a ruler to measure plausible distances.Like,I take out damn ruler and put it at my damn screen in real life.
For my screen max jump is 3,3 sm.You may laugh, but it saved me from a lot of dead ends.
