[Suggestion] Oxygen Control

Post by Zaffre »

I was micromanaging my airlocks today and I thought that there should be something that allows more precise control of oxygen. By this, I mean cutting off oxygen to individual rooms without having to open airlocks. My proposition is that at O2 generator level two, there would be two icons next to the generator: one would show a cloud and another would show a black cloud. When you click the black cloud and then on a room, oxygen will stop being supplied to that room. When you click on the white cloud and then on a room, it will resume supplying oxygen to a room.

On level three, you could control percentages (in intervals of ten percent, i.e. 10%, 20%...) of oxygen going into a room. You could have it just at suffocation percentage and then when the enemy arrives there make it one percent higher so you can send your crew in to finish the job.

There would be a level four oxygen as well. Level four oxygen would have a backup generator. When the subsystem gets destroyed, there will be a backup that will keep oxygen at enough percentage that your crew will not die, but it will not regenerate oxygen until repaired. To combat this, if the sensors are damaged the emergency oxygen will dissipate due to the sensors not being able to assess the oxygen level in a room.

That would make things too easy + complicate something that now is pure and simple yet complicated enough to be fun. Opening airlocks and doors in corridors so the fire in the room in the middle of your ship would be stopped is major part of fun for me in this game. Or opening half of your ship to kill boarders (yeah, mantis, you won't kill my zolans, you won't even touch them :D).

I must disagree with the assessment that it would be too easy. Leveling up the oxygen system would require power, a limited resource.

But I do see that it removes a reason to choose deck plans based on exterior hatches and airflow. So I rather like the system as it currently exists.

Wouldn't mind this at all. An excellent idea!

One thing that could be done, certainly, would be to have higher-level O2 systems have a larger "battery" of backup O2, so that when the system goes down, you have more time to fix it before you start suffocating.
