Zoltan Trick.
The Zoltan Shield in your inventory only influences the Zoltan Shield Display. Sell it for spare scrap and you will no longer see how many points of Zoltan Shield you have remaining, but you will still have the actual Zoltan Shield.

I decided to try it, just to see if it works, and not for the purposes of unlocking any ships or achievements. I can confirm it does work, but only for as long as the current game session remains open. If you save and quit at any point after you sell the Zoltan shield augmentation, when you start the game again, and continue from the main menu, the Zoltan shield will be truly gone.
I consider it an exploit, personally. I won't use it again.
