FTL, how did it gain so much publicity?

Out of curiosity, how did FTL garner so much publicity?

It is all over gaming news media websites, youtube lets plays, endorsements from people such as notch on twitter. And now its a steam top seller.

How did it gain so much attention? It's a fantastic game, and definitely deserves it. I am mostly curious because someday in the future I would love to build my own game as well. And would like to emulate any steps this game took to become as successful as it has.

I think one of the reasons are the presence on kickstarter at the right time, ie the beginning of the kickstarter bandwagon. I found it through trying to back the DFA and some other games.

Being one of the first highly funded kickstarter games to come out helps as well.

Nerd³ or OfficialNerdCubed on Youtube did a few videos and those got me hooked.

Word of mouth, Totalbiscuit, and that's it. When it hit *at least* 200% of it's goal, a lot of sites reported it, and most people seen it *at least* once. It only grew from there.

Me? A friend showed me TB's video of it, I initially thought it sucked from the screens. After that video, immediately put money aside for it.

I found it through onlive, just before the kickstarter. Thought, "this is worth a few £'s" I expect a lot of publicity has come from being on steam's homepage, and top sellers list.

I think it also comes from it's unique game play.

Can you name a game where you have the ability to manage the crew of a starship in the fashion of FTL? I've been waiting for a game like this for a long time!
