Drone AI sucks

Post by Darkgobbo »

So why will drones constantly attack red systems like oxygen and doors while the enemies' weapons or drones are kicking the crap out of me. They should prioritize certain systems above others or some sort of semi targeting. For example pick a system and very other shot will be aimed at it. otherwise you can take a lot of damage waiting for them to kill it.

They're supposed to suck. It's just a dumb computer randomly targeting sections of the hull; they would be even more broken than they currently are if they intelligently disabled key enemy systems.

It's a trade off. you exchange the ability to target for rapid fire. If you could target specific rooms you would need it to have a charge time similar to the normal weapons systems.

The real trick to using anti-ship drones is to combine them with your own weaponry.

Drones can't be shot down and they don't interfere with your cloak. So if you get two (or heaven forbid three, if you're rocking the Engi Cruiser,) anti-ship drones out in space, the enemy's shields are going to be basically chewed up by the drones.

Then you come in with high-volume, low-Power-cost firepower (Burst Laser IIs being ideal, but basically anything that charges fast and/or fires a lot of shots at once,) and you capitalize like a sucker on the opening the drones make in the enemy shields. If you just want to make some scrap metal, just wipe out or ionize their shield generator and the drones will chew their hull apart in short order.
Frustrated by random things beyond your control killing you?

Yes i know your not supposed to target them but maybe when they have destroyed two systems...move on stop firing on those systems. that is all, i want red systems to be out of the random selection, unless i cant tell they are red but when i have sensors telling me they are busted shoot something else!

Yes i know there are tricks to using drones but thats not what i care about

TL:DR Just want my drones to stop beating dead horses

why should it not shoot at enemy crew repairing broken systems? what if your strategy incorporates firebombs/beams and boarding drones? If you got your will through other people trying other things will be annoyed.

It's very simple.
> If you want to target systems, use weapons.
> If you want to do indiscriminate damage, use drones.
Mystery solved.

What is the deal with boarding drones? I've had boarding drones board a ship, fight off enemies, destroy a system, and then stay motionless. Is that normal? Are they not supposed to move around the ship wreaking havoc, or whatever the blurb said?
