Anyway to get rid of this stupid mechanic?
Apparently, if the flagship gets within 2 jumps of the base, you lose. This being despite the fact that the flag ship gets pushed back on loss anyway, so even defending the base while at the base should be possible. This is absolutely stupid, beyond any measure of "real difficulty" and just goes into "fuck you difficulty" where it's entirely out of your control. While the fact that I was on my best run yet and so close to getting the Federation Cruiser adds quite a bit to my anger *I survived the first flagship encounter with green HP left*, one doesn't have to be angry to see it's a dumb mechanic.

They explain in the game this is because the flagship's superweapons have extremely long range
Spoiler: As you destroy the ship's systems, you reduce the range of its weapon from 2 to 1 to needing to be in the same system.

I just think it's absolutely ridiculous that they couldn't come up with a difficult enough final boss, so they had to make one that can cause you to lose from jumps away.

I have to agree considering after winning a fight I couldn't get back to the ship fast enough to even stop him from getting to the base, I essentially lost the game because I won a fight?
Lore wise, isn't you're mission to carry intel back to the fleet? Intel about the flagship, like intel that would tell you that the enemy ship could somehow teleport after being destroyed?
At least tell the player so they know that they need to rush the flagship ASAP.

Hey, no biggie, this game is about replayability. Now you know and can avoid letting the flagship get too close.
Also, the game does tell you if you read the stuff when you enter the sector.

Yeah, pretty bad design right there at the end, as absolutely marvelous as the rest of the game is though. I'd also like to see an infinite exploration sort of mode, where you just go from sector to sector to sector to sector to sector to sector, and on and on. See how many randomized sectors you can survive
EDIT: It's not about knowing that it happens, it's about knowing that it's a crappy mechanic.

Do you stay in every sector until Rebels catch up with you too? To be honest that's more ridiculous than the "do not let enemy flagship too close to your base or all hope is lost" thing.George_Orwell wrote:I just think it's absolutely ridiculous that they couldn't come up with a difficult enough final boss, so they had to make one that can cause you to lose from jumps away.

Is the warning in the sector map not enough?meiam wrote:I have to agree considering after winning a fight I couldn't get back to the ship fast enough to even stop him from getting to the base, I essentially lost the game because I won a fight?

I think someone has reported losing directly after winning against the flagship, and the devs acknowledged that they may change the flagship jump behavior so you don't automatically lose after a win.

I would like to see this, but I feel like it'd turn into a cakewalk so quickly. They'd have to throw enemies even harder than the final boss to hope to provide a challenge, and without any difficulty it's basically a cheap way to access all the game's content without working, which doesn't seem in the spirit of FTL.George_Orwell wrote:Yeah, pretty bad design right there at the end, as absolutely marvelous as the rest of the game is though. Not quite. The ships would just scale up beyond what your ship could do...and then the real fun begins!
