Go for normal. It is supposed to be a roguelike, so dieing is part of the learning experience. Once you get a hang of things, the game is generally not that hard.

Re: Easy or Normal?
I started on normal and then switched to easy. I unlocked two ships and then switched back to normal again. Easy mode also has a separate achievement (Final Boss kill -easy-).
Get to sector 5 to unlock a ship. That's the easiest one to get.

I got both the easy and the normal final boss kill achievements from killing the boss on normal.

Easy. "Normal" mode on FTL is equivalent to "God Hard" mode on any non-Roguelike (and yes, I'm aware that this is a trait shared by all Roguelikes).gameassassin1020 wrote:Should I play on easy or normal. I just started playing today and id say ive got the hang of it but i was on normal...

Think of Normal Mode on any given Roguelike game like this: it was created for the people who enjoy games like Dwarf Fortress. The official tagline of Dwarf Fortress? "Losing is fun". People who play Roguelikes regularly enjoy cripplingly-hard challenges, so Normal mode on a Roguelike is the equivalent of playing one of your favorite shooters, only the enemies all have X-ray vision, perfect aim, instant-rev and infinite-ammo Gatlings, no range limits, infinite health, and a grudge.
And you have a herring.
Play on Easy if you don't enjoy crushing challenges like that. It's not like anyone cares.

Just do whatever you find enjoyable.

Re: Easy or Normal?
Honestly it doesnt matter which difficulty you play. If you want higher odds of victory, go with easy though.
The bossfight at the end is just a gearcheck. You either earned enough in all the previous sectors to beat the boss or you didn't. The part of the game involving skill is how often you make it to the last sector imo.
but 70% of the time you'll get to the last sector with to little firepower because of having to make repairs/upgrade from bad luck with the events/ enemy generation.
