Can't get myself to like the game after multiple attempts

Played for a couple hours last night and quit out of disappointment and frustration of my progress being shot to hell from things that are completely out of my control. Gave it another go just now and after one of my crew died taking damage from both no oxygen and trying to put the fire out in the oxygen room, I thought to myself "Why am i putting myself through this aggravation?"
I understand that some people like this randomness in games like this. I understand that some people will say "But this happens in REAL LIFE! YADDA YADDA BLABBERBLAB..." But this is a game and I'm trying to be entertained here, not pay money to feed a masochistic side of me that doesn't even exist.
Combat is too slow. I understand weapons charge faster with people in the room, but granted I never got a crew of more than 4 people, and they were all in the weapons room, it was still at a snail's pace. This topped off with the notion that during my next jump I could end up dying because of a solar flare and the oxygen room being on fire and my guys dying while trying to put out the fire (Hint, basically dying due to nothing that was really my fault in any of my gameplay hence making me feel like nothing I do in game with upgrades and whatnot make a damn bit of difference) just make the time spent waiting for combat to resolve itself that much more painful to bear.
Too hard on normal? Probably, for the average gamer. i can't see any average Joe Gamer picking this up and being happy with it. I can see roguelike fans who expect this sort of thing to be happy with it though, but still. I consider myself to be someone with a lot of patience, and even i can't really put up with it. Then again I'm also a gamer that likes to be entertained and not randomly punished and then made to feel like I should enjoy that punishment that takes away the time you put into progressing because that's just part of the way "It's supposed to be."
Well the way it's supposed to be kinda sucks.
