Played for a couple hours last night and quit out of disappointment and frustration of my progress being shot to hell from things that are completely out of my control. Gave it another go just now and after one of my crew died taking damage from both no oxygen and trying to put the fire out in the oxygen room, I thought to myself "Why am i putting myself through this aggravation?"
I understand that some people like this randomness in games like this. I understand that some people will say "But this happens in REAL LIFE! YADDA YADDA BLABBERBLAB..." But this is a game and I'm trying to be entertained here, not pay money to feed a masochistic side of me that doesn't even exist.
Combat is too slow. I understand weapons charge faster with people in the room, but granted I never got a crew of more than 4 people, and they were all in the weapons room, it was still at a snail's pace. This topped off with the notion that during my next jump I could end up dying because of a solar flare and the oxygen room being on fire and my guys dying while trying to put out the fire (Hint, basically dying due to nothing that was really my fault in any of my gameplay hence making me feel like nothing I do in game with upgrades and whatnot make a damn bit of difference) just make the time spent waiting for combat to resolve itself that much more painful to bear.
Too hard on normal? Probably, for the average gamer. i can't see any average Joe Gamer picking this up and being happy with it. I can see roguelike fans who expect this sort of thing to be happy with it though, but still. I consider myself to be someone with a lot of patience, and even i can't really put up with it. Then again I'm also a gamer that likes to be entertained and not randomly punished and then made to feel like I should enjoy that punishment that takes away the time you put into progressing because that's just part of the way "It's supposed to be."
Well the way it's supposed to be kinda sucks.

That is alright. Can't satisfy everyone....or even most people.
Glad you tried out the game. To bad it isn't you type of game.

My brother and me are really enjoying it.

These will help.
As to not all gamers will play this. I would tend to disagree and so would the 2000% mark up on the kickstarter page. If it's not your cup of tea after watching a few videos then I am sorry, but there are times i have bought a full price game and hated it. Be glad you only spent around $10.

Fires should be vented since crew are terrible at putting them out for some reason, but this is a roguelike so not everyone will like it.

Also, just a quick note to the OP: subsystems improve as long as -one- crew member is manning the controls: more don't make it go faster. Having four people in the room makes it charge as fast as having one, so send those other 3 off to make other systems better.

Putting more than 1 person in the weapons room won't make it go any faster. No wonder that you keep getting destroyed. You should put the others on shield and engine. Fires are usually easy to handle, just open the appropriate airlocks and the fire will suffocate. Also remember you can hit spacebar to pause and issue commands and carefully think about your strategy. I think you should learn to play the game before giving up. Watch some let's plays on YouTube and you'll get the hang of it pretty fast. I beat the boss on normal in my fifth play-through.velz wrote:I never got a crew of more than 4 people, and they were all in the weapons room, it was still at a snail's pace.

Honestly Velz, all the reasons you said you dislike the game are the exact reason I like it. It takes a bit a time to get an idea of how to best survive, but it won't be too long before you come up with a strategy that allows you to survive and gain enough crew to man all your stations but also have additional crew for repairs and fighting with enemies that board your ship.
Once you have all these pieces in place the battles won't seem as slow when you are micromanaging people to go perform various task related to the above.
Again, this is exactly WHY I love the game. I like that I can be put in a situation where my O2 room is depressurized to put out a fire while both the door controls and O2 tank are disabled. Sometimes it's best to just pause the game, analyze the situation and determine how to overcome it. Sometimes that means sacrificing a few crew members to repair the O2.
Granted, you don't always survive. But I don't really feel like the point of the game is to always beat the boss. It's about those adventures where you go so far with a crew but something happens and they just don't make it.
