[Suggestion] Should the player be able to attempt surrender?

Post by SpaceManSpiff »

Hello all!

Not sure if this is viable this late in development, but I think that the ability to attempt surrender would be a good feature.

There could be a button during combat that you can press if you feel as though there is no way you will win the battle. The odds that the enemy accepts your surrender can be low (or maybe vary based on the type of enemy), and if they do accept they should take a bunch of your stuff - maybe even one or more crew members. That way the punishment of losing a battle is still stiff, but you don't need to start all over again.

In other news, I just got into the beta a couple of days ago, and holy shit this game is awesome. I funded it on Kickstarter because I thought it was a cool idea, but I didn't really know what to expect so I wasn't overly excited. But man, the last two days playing this game have been awesome. Really love what you guys have done.....the quests and battles have a real Trek feel, and the ship management is super fun. Awesome job.

The thing is that the game isn't designed to be a "great escape" kind of thing. Once you realize what you will face in the endgame, there's little point in "barely surviving" a sector, because you'll be in no shape to battle the boss anyway.

But I agree. At least for new players it'll be a marvelous experience. :) Maybe it'll be a random event instead of the player clicking a surrender button - because they won't always accept anyway. Just like how the enemy might try surrendering to you.

For example. A dialogue could go like this:
With your ship burning and smoldering, your crew frantically tried to beg for mercy from the enemy. Somehow they are willing to "negotiate" a peace, if you give them x missiles, x drones and xx scraps. A fair trade for your survival, no doubt.

1. Give in to the terms. Delivering the data is too important a quest to fail.
2. Screw this! We're going out blazing.
There's some disturbance on the comm. The head of the slaver ship have a message for you.
"You know what? I'm not going to waste my ammunition on some worthless scraps. You refused my offer of one slave and see where you are now. Surrender two people to me now and I might let you live. This is a one-time offer."

You decide:
1. Anything to survive. Give up two crew members.
2. Turn off the comm. We're not leaving anyone behind!
"Oh hey. Your xxxx augmentation/weapon/drone isn't blown to pieces yet right? That's worth a lot more intact. Tell you what. How about you guys give that to us, and we'll probably feel generous enough to let you live? Be sure to drop a line sweetheart."
Pirates these days. Is everything a joke to them? Nonetheless, considering the situation you are in, this seems to be quite the deal.

1. It sure didn't help us in this battle. Might as well give it to someone else.
2. We'll never surrender! It's all or nothing!
Your desperate plea for compassion seems to finally reach the right person. If giving up most of your materiel is more desirable than oblivion, they are willing to let you go, this time.
After all, an explosion might catch too much attention.

1. Yes. Surrender xx scraps and xxx weapon/drone/augmentation for your lives.
2. No. Without those we won't have a chance in our mission anyway. Don't stop firing.

Your suggestions sound great, Spiff!

I'd like it a lot if there was an option to surrender. It might not be very useful, but I feel it should be implemented. Imagine the pride gained from a brutal comeback and boss defeat after having surrendered to some pirates in the second sector.
