Suggestion: FTL Daily Challenges (as in Spelunky)

Post by Flynn »

In Spelunky the daily challenge is a special level that is created one time per day, and can be only played on that day, that is exactly the same for every player. You can only make one attempt. In this level all procedural generated elements that can be the same between players, are. So in FTL this would mean the same map for each sector, encounters on the map, items in each store, weapon drops from ships, events and their results, and so on. To the extent that it would be possible to preserve battle RNG like evasion chance that would be nice too but necessary.

This was a small feature added to the PC part, but it has completely changed the game for me. The normal game just feel like practice for the daily challenge. When I hit a dark level (a really challenging but fairly rare level in the game) I can't wait to hit up youtube and see what horrible fates befell everyone else. Comparing progress and failures with friends is the best. I'll never top the overall top score list but I might be a bunch of friends on a particular day.

This would be amazing in FTL as well. When I get wiped in that ion storm I want to be able to hit up youtube and see other people stressing out just I did.

I think this feature would have the greatest return-on-effort of any new feature that FTL could have. Devs -- any chance? Please? Friends list comparing through Steam is not a requirement, merely having a single daily level would go a long long way.

I've never played Spelunky so I don't know how it works exactly, but even starting with a random number seed FTL won't play the same way 2 times through. All you need to do is fire one weapon before or after your enemy's weapon is fired (or before or after an asteroid goes by, or a solar flare, or anything else that would generate a random number) and the entire rest of the sector or encounter would go very differently.

Add that to the fact that it would take quite a bit of coding to a project that is essentially done and I'd say this would never happen.

However, I appreciate the desire for it!
