How to save a game to continue later?

This is a super newbie question, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to do this in-game.

There's no menu button or save button I can see and if I alt-F4 my game ends.

I know it's possible to do this because there's a continue button on the main menu.

What am I missing here?

Press escape and you can choose Save & Quit from the menu. The game will be saved in MyGames/Faster Than Light as continue.sav

Now, once you continue that game, the file will be deleted, so you will have to Save & Quit again to continue. Part of what makes FTL tick is not having the luxury and safety of abusing saved games.
