Found this interesting:
Giving that one tile of a room = 2 meters and a lot of rough estimates, the sekkrit ship is 20 meters wide and 40 meters long. Using the Federation and Rebel fleet images as guidelines, most ships do not have more than one deck.
A U.S. Navy frigate is 136 meters long.
A Nimitz class Supercarrier is 333 meters long.
Within unused! game files, the Rebel ships pursuing you are frigates and destroyers.
Given the in-game numbers are accurate, and the lack of need for any supplies or anything, many battles don't last over 2 minutes, and the journeys of your ship commonly do not last over two and a half hours at maximum.
Given the solar flare sun sizes and distances and actual distances, you are jumping several light years with each press of the "JUMP" button.
Very interesting...

Re: FTL and scale
I think it's safe to assume that the in game scale is not representative of real life, and is in fact scaled down for our entertainment purposes. You wouldn't want to wait several minutes while a laser charges and cools down now would you? ;p

Also I think there ARE multiple decks on probably most classes of ships. It just makes more sense that way.

Re: FTL and scale
A few things some people must realize about space Sci Fi in general.
1. Modern ships can have multiple decks and a large crew size, because of the resources available, and don't need to contend with lasers, asteroids, and lack of oxygen in space.
2. Ships in FTL do. Lack of a large crew makes oxygen more available to be used. The hull needs to be thicker to withstand stronger impacts, so small crew space is more practical. On top of that (despite what name goes with it) most of the ships are frigate size, and in general that usually differs.
3. About the size of the maps and traveling, it's the future, there are one thousand and one ways to travel. Each way goes faster than speed of light, pun intended. But anyways, it could be like BSG and traveling is instantaneous, or like Star Trek/Wars/Gate/Ship Troopers and Halo, where it takes a certain time to travel.
4. Or you can look at it like this. Each person you have on a ship represents a group of people. If you have a person in the pilot area, that could be a regular sized command crew. Someone you have in the shield room, could be a group that supports and maintains the shield system. So on and so forth. So if you look at it that way, these ships are just as large, if not, larger than ships we're used to seeing.
(Basically, while everything is small, it's actually so many more times larger in reality.)

Re: FTL and scale
In FTL, the ships are small like, like the millenium falcon. Not super sized, like a star destroyer. The millenium falcon only has 1 deck and several rooms.
