Need a measuring tape?

Post by RAD-82 »

Is anybody else bothered by this picture? I saw it on a Reddit post.

It appears to me that the dead-end jump is closer to the exit than the jump up from the ship's current position. Looks like evidence that distance is not a factor on whether a jump is possible or not. It makes me think about how some people like to play without the lines that show the jump path.

I think distance is still a factor. It's just a matter of pixels.

I once had a run into an Abandoned Sector where all the Quest Beacons were at the end and the Exit was only accessible from a thin strand of beacons at the start of the sector. I think I rage-quit or at least gave up and tried another run.

But the game can get rather finicky about what's a connection or not depending on how many pixels away it is.

I used a piece of paper that happened to have a mark close to where the beacon up from the ship was, when the bottom of the paper was at the ship. Compared to the ship/exit jump it looks to be roughly the same distance. I think the "it's closer" is an optical illusion possibly due to the /!\ ship icon making your brain think the line should start at its edge.

The fact that they're roughly the same length yet one has a line and the other doesn't is no big deal to me. "Roughly" is not "exactly" and as stylesrj said, one pixel could make the difference between making the jump and not.

Thanks for that. I really should've been the one to put up that kind of graphic, but I was lazy. I was using a crop tool to measure the x and y distances, since I could easily move the box from one position to the other.
