As various people have already asked me over various mediums, yes, you can unlock ships. No, I don't think modifying the contents of the DAT files to achieve this is a good idea. So just modify your prof.sav.

From what I've seen (I haven't exactly spent a long time on this) you're looking at needing achievements for the types. If you REALLY want to cheat you could serialise your own format based on what I've posted on the wiki.
If the mods/devs have an issue with it, it can be removed, I honestly don't mind. Being relatively old hat the roguelikes I don't find this all that hard, though I'm pretty sure the dice are all trying to kill me.

What do you mean by "Take 4 bytes off the end"? The end of the ships section before the next string?
