I keep meeting the mothership, but not strong enough

Postby xman1 » Sun Sep 16, 2012 9:33 pm

Any tips on killing that thing? I see posts of people with nice sounding weapons, but I never seem to find them, or enough of them.

I haven't beaten the flagship yet, but I just had some success using the Torus wielding the default Ion gun, the Halberd beam and the Firebomb. I also used the Anti-Ship Mark II drone.

I didn't use missiles at all for most of the game, so I had something like 60 when I got to the last sector. The mothership's weakness, I think, is that there's no way to repair the guns if you can kill the soldiers in each of the little weapon chambers. That's pretty easy with firebombs (target the missiles first). I also had 3 shields, which effectively insulated me from the other fire coming from the ship and let me concentrate on killing the crew.

I died IMMEDIATELY when it shifted to the second form. I'm not sure how to counter the drones yet, but I think swapping the firebomb for an ion bomb might work. I focused all my fire on taking down the drone control, but the crew were too much for me. If I'd had it, a Defense Mk. II would have saved my ass.

You could also use the teleport to beam an attack squad into each chamber and take out the guns. I usually keep 3 guys (usually mantis/rock/human or another rock) as a kind of floating squad in my ship; they'd make short work of the guns on that fucker. I probably should've done this, too.

The major rule is that you need a pretty high upgraded ship either way you build on offense or defense.

But there are also some recommendet weapons you should buy some of:
- a set Laser or Ionguns to get down 4 Shieldpoints very quickly (the easiest way should be to get 2 Laser Burst II, while the other equipement is pretty rare, except if you start with some^^). If he cloaks before you can get his shield down, then it's gonna be a very hard fight, you normally can't win (so ensure to have enough firepower and Rockets if it depends on it)
- A Bomb (fire or small would be better then ion) or a Fire Beam
- at least shild 3, better 4 and/or a Zoltan Shield
- Cloaksystem (at least 1 point), especially if you just got a Shield to 3
- Teleport station or 3 Defensive Drones (i recommend the first one^^) or a Bio Beam (i didn't test it yet against the boss^^)
- enough crewmembers (especially some Engi and Mantis would be usefull for the second stage)
- Sensors should be lv2

The first thing to do is, that you need to send out your fighters to take out the ion and rockets (1 Mantis or 2 others except Engi per weapon) and then the Beam-Guy, but let the Laser-Guy alive. After that is done you should kill everybody inside the Main-Part via Fire or handfight (the first way should be easier, but its a bit too easy^^) and you can also use a Bio-Beam, if you can hold down their MedBay

In the second stage you should take out their drone-system first by porting in or set some Bombs/Fire in to prevent his Robots to attack you inside your own ship (and you should stop him before he can destroy your Hull). More you don't need to do here except breaking his Hull^^ But you need to look out for his special ability, just cloaking when he uses it works best here or a Good filled Hull-Bar (Breaking the Enemy should be very quickly, if you got a nearly Full Bar at the beginning, then it should be good enough). A Defensive Drone can help too to block his Robot, so buy the Dronehangar if you don't need to spend your money on other ways.

The third Stage is very easy if you killed everybody, cause he can't send you any people^^ just take out his Zoltan Shield and destroy him completely and cloak if he uses his ability. If you dont get a Cloak, then send 1-2 Crewmember to each of his weapons and take dons his ship as fast as possible (but port your crew back early enough if you don't want to loose them^^ R.I.P. a Mantis, whose name i don't remember =( )

It depends a little bit on luck to get all of this weapons and a good Boss Fight-Map where you don't need to fight too many rebells or where you get though repair-beacons, but you should get it all if you don't rush through the levels, but you should take out as many ships by killing the crew to get more money (so a Teleporter in the first 2 Sectors would be great^^).

Here's my story.

The Kestrel.

4 Shields.
6 crew of various race.
3 Blast Laser II with 15% faster recharge augmentation.
5 or 6 engine.
All crewable statons have yellow with **
Tons of power to run it all.

1st phase of final boss wasn't tough.
Went into 2nd phase with hull in green.
I concentrated fire on the Drone Module because I had fought the boss before.
Boss still flayed me during power surge.

I found Cloak a few times, but was always a few scrap short of the cost.
I made it to 3rd phase once, but it was in a less powerful ship.

Just beat the game on easy. Cloak is the secret along with at least 40% evasion. Combine the two and you get 100% for misses - which means when the mothership fires missiles, go to cloak immediately.

Had 3 x burst lasers too.

Now maybe I can try normal.

I just beat the ship on easy for the first time using the starting ship. For my weapons I had a Burst Laser 2, Burst Laser 1, Heavy Ion and Ion Bomb. I also had a Defensive Drone Mk 1 and Beam Drone Mk 1. No cloak or teleporter on my ship. 4 shield points. 6 crew members (1 human, 1 slug, 1 mantis, 1 crystal, 1 zoltan, 1 engi).

Would start by launching drones and then waiting for all my weapons to be ready. I'd fire my Ion Bomb at the shields to keep half of them disabled most of the time. I then used my lasers to knock out the other guns while the shields were disabled. My Heavy Ion in the 1st phase would keep one of the weapons disabled or lower the shields even more, 2nd phase I used it to disable some of their drones. Whatever the 3rd phase power surge was supposed to do I never noticed it. I also used my Heavy Ion to just keep their teleporter disabled so they couldn't come over.

I just beat the game on normal. Sorry if the wording and names are off.

I had...

Mark 2 laser (3 shots)
Mark 1 laser (2 shots)
Hull laser (1 shot)
Some other laser (2 shots)

So I was throwing a ton of firepower out. I had like 50 missiles I couldn't use. Through the run of the game I had Mark 3 laser, but it was too expensive of a power requirement and I never used it. Plus the charge time was longggggggggg.

Shields 4
Evade 42% I believe

3 humans
1 rock man
1 slug

Fighting the mothership I concentrated all firepower on the shields, then move to weapons/droids depending on the phase.

Ion cannon II+ Halberd beam

4 shields, Max engine, max stealth

Preferably a strong anti boarding crew (mantises, rocks, crystals) and max doors.
That's all you need, really.

I dont understand how you guys can have so much equipment when you attack the mothership.

I try to visit as many points in a map before the fleet takes over the area. When I get to the mother ship Im lucky if I have 3 shields, 4 crew, 3 random weapon that I got from loot, and mayne 30% dodge.

How do you get so much scraps so you can upgrade to all that? Even if I dont take much damage on the way I still cant get enough to upgrade to all that weapons and drones. And how can you get so many crew members? The most I have had is 5, then I was really lucky to get a few on the way that wanted to join the crew. I cant afford to hire any because I need all the scraps I can get for upgrades.

For me it's mostly luck and trying to ALWAYS help when I get a distress signal or meet someone who needs help.
Also trading in drones/missiles for fuel is useful to visit many systems, before the rebels take over.

Another little tip of mine:
When you meet a slaver, don't give him scrap parts for a crewman.
Just attack him and when the option comes up, choose to let him live in trade for one of the slaves.
I ALWAYS got a new crewman out of this.

Oh, yes and before you go and get yourself done in:
DON'T help the mad guy that lingers around in a cave.
Both times I tried he made things worse.
The first time he killed one of three crewman, the second time he damaged the ship for about 10%...
Kill him, ignore him, bite him... but never ever let him on your ship!
