How do droids work please? (and also boarding)

Post by PaleKing »

Hello, - a couple of brief questions if I may:
I've had a couple of games where I've ended up in possession of a droid or two, but I can't see how to launch them. Do I need an upgrade or droid launcher of some sort first? Are the droids I found expended like ammo on use?

Also - I've seen mention of sending over a boarding party to attack a ship but I can't see how. Is this another upgrade of some sort that I havn't seen yet?

Cheers chaps.

You need a drone room which can be found in shops sometimes

As the above poster said, a drone subsystem will allow you to use drones. Likewise, a Crew Teleporter subsystem will allow you to send over boarding parties to enemy ships. Both can be randomly found in stores.

Very simple answers:

The drones that you find are kept in your equipment inventory until you've bought a drones module. This costs 80 (I think) and will grant you one free system repair drone along with adding any of your previous drones into the slot.

The drones cost 1 'drone part' each the first time you use them, and will use up 2-4 energy for as long as you keep them alive.

As far as I've noticed, there are two different kinds of drones:

Inside drones
These drones cost 1 drone part the first time you activate it, and will not cost any more drone parts until they die, irregardless of how many times you jump or de-activate and re-activate them. They also have their own scanner systems, and will detect objectives even in darkened rooms. These drones will also repair themselves (at 50% speed of regular medbay healing) while stationed in the drone system room.

There is a system repair drone that automatically walks to any room with a hull breach, fire, or damaged system, and will start to repair it. The only thing that can damage this drone is fire, which makes it excellent to repair oxygen-less rooms or breaches. But it is not controllable, and will walk wherever it pleases and might die doing so. This drone costs 30 to purchase at any shop.

And a Anti-Personnel Drone, which will seek up enemy boarders and attack them until it or them dies. This drone have 150 health and approx 120% damage, since it can defeat almost all intruders as long as he is alone. This drone costs ~60 to purchase at any shop.

And the Boarding drone, a very strong teleporting drone that will pick a random room to spawn in and create a hull breach inside it, after it will start attacking any systems or enemies inside that room. (I haven't used this so much, so I'm not sure if it's able to control it or how strong it is or how much health it's got, but there's an achievement for killing four guys with it).

Outside drones
These drones cost 1 drone part each time you activate it, and will be lost (Unless you have a 'Drone recycler arm', which will pick up the drone and put it back into your ship as one drone part) whenever you jump. They will fly around the ship and either shoot repeatedly or target enemy shots.

The Anti-ship drone mark 1 costs 2 energy and will shoot the enemy ship at 1 damage about as fast as it takes a normal shield (manned) to regenerate. This drone costs ~50 to purchase at any shop.

The Anti-ship drone mark 2 costs 4 energy and will shoot roughly 75% faster than the mark 1 anti-ship drone, making it very effective against ships with only 1 or disabled shields. This drone costs ~100 to purchase at any shop. This drone costs ~100 to purchase at any shop.

The Anti-ship beam drone costs 2 energy and will repeatedly shoot a beam at the enemy ship, very effective at shield-less ships as the beam will cross 2 rooms for 1 damage each, but will not penetrate shields at all and is useless if it's alone.

The Defense drone mark 1 costs 2 energy and will fly around the outside of your shield and shoot down any missiles that the enemy shoots towards your ship, with a recharge time of ~2 seconds.

The Defense drone mark 2 costs 4 energy and behaves just like the mark 1, but will also shoot incoming lasers, making your ship invulnerable towards ships with only one or two weapons. It has a recharge time of ~1.5 seconds.

(A squiggly (~) indicates a rounded or not precise number)
(This is also only from my own personal experience and is both likely to change and maybe incorrect)

The boarding is done by a Personnel teleporter system, which costs 125 to purchase. Upgrading this means shorter recharge time.

By placing your men into the teleporter system room and clicking the 'teleport out' button located by the teleporter system energy, and then selecting a room on the enemy ship, the crew that was standing still on the squares inside the teleporter room will the teleported to the enemy ship, allowing them direct frontal attack of the enemy ships' systems and crew.

When you feel your crew has done their job or is about to die, simply place them standing still in a room and then click the 'teleport in' button and select the room in which they are, making them teleport back into your teleporter room, ready to run into medbay or whatever.

Yaaaay that took me a long time to write and I really hope you will enjoy reading it and understand how everything works and I am also very tired and I am too lazy to read through it to correct any tiny grammar mistake or whatever
I always have this great idea to post about when reading a thread, but I always seem to loose the subject while writing a reply, and end up not saying anything at all. I should sleep more. Is that a cookie?

Thank you very much for such a comprehensive answer. It is just what I needed and I thank you for that. I'll have a few games this morning and try to get myself some drones to experiment with. It's starting to seem that this game needs a full manual somewhere.
Cheers again.

I thank you for your appreciation, and if you need a manual, you could try the wiki :p

Except that it's still in very much in progress, but I might contribute to it :D
