Ship Idea: The Identified Object

Hi,
I've been playing FTL for the past month or so (on both Mac and iPad), I've spent about 3h/day with this game, and unlocked everything at Class A except the Crystal Cruiser. Since I started playing I got this idea in my head everytime I go to sleep, and my original plan was to make a mockup for you guys, but ill try without it at first to see what you guys think about my idea...

I would like a new ship design, very similar to how comic books portrayed space crafts in the 50-60s, a perfect round shape. The kind of round ship we all get in our heads when someone say "UFO". This new ship that I'm calling "The Identified Object" would come with new crew members that looks like classic aliens. White, with big heads etc.

The way I've imagined this ship is to have to rooms spread out around the corners of the ship, this would leave a large empty space in the middle where the "dock" would be. So, control room (Icon with the steering weel) at center and possible also the shields-room, everything else spread out around the corners (or walls, since it's round). In front of the "control room" there is two doors for letting out air. One facing down and one up (from the players point of view.) so that one door can empty the lower half of the ship of air, and the other door would drain the air from to top part of the ship. That way you basically have to empty at least 50% of the ship to stop fire/enemies boarding you. I think that would be interesting.

As weapons go, ofc they will have some kind of "abduction beam". The way this will work is similar to the teleporter, but works backwards and it's a one way ticket. The player could then "abduct" an enemy from the enemy ship and place him in a room of their choosing. For example, a medbay full of blood thirsty crew members, or a room with no oxygen. The abduction beam has a cooldown that's pretty much exactly like the teleporter and once the effect wears out, the abducted enemy will be transported back to his ship unless you managed to kill him. Ofc this would be more of a subsystem then a weapon really. The abduction beam also works through shields, like the teleporter so the only weapon you would need to start with should be a dual laser or something like that.

Now, the new alien race needs a new ability. I got two ideas here, where the first one might be over the top. That these creatures could teleport themselves to another room at the same ship, IF they are under an attack from an enemy crew member. This can only be done once per fight since the aliens drain 50% of their life when they do it, from concentrating to hard :) Or, a more subtile ability would be %5 faster recharge rate for shields/weapons (while they man a station)

The Identified Object would also need a argumentation. How about faster FTL-jump recharge to battle the weak weapon arsenal at start. Or the ability to go back to previously visited beacons (can't remember the name of that one).


Ofc, I'm very eager to hear what you think of this idea. I guess the developers doesn't read the forum but It would still be nice to elaborate. And, oh, please be kind with criticism if you think this idea is very bad. At least I got it out of my head.

Well, it's certainly a neat idea. Unfortunately, the devs are "done" with FTL, and i doubt you'll be seeing much added in the future. As for making this through modding, Most of your new suggestions like, the abduction beam and new race, are not possible due to hardcoding. sorry.

Oh darn. That's really sad. When I saw this on iPad I thought it was the beginning, not the end. Well, thanks for telling me. I hope they change their minds because this game is freaking amazing and I would pay plenty for DLC.

Post this in Mod Development, and I'd guess that some modder would make it.

It could start with a teleporter and mind control, allowing you to "beam back" mind-controlled victims. ;)

Yeah, but we can count out mods on iPad right?
I hope this game sells like crazy on iPad. That might convince the developers to make some DLC. God knows the game is well worth it's price.

Someone should kick start this. Worked well for Star Command and that game is just a rip off, off ftl, not even done.

:roll: FTL exists because of Kickstarter. And Advanced Edition is the DLC.

One can always hope that the devs will release the Source Code at the end of the game's fiscal cycle, but that's a mess both legally and ethically, so it's more of a pipe dream.

But this things we could *do* with the Source Code and the devs' blessings. COOP FTL, custom hangars, multiple-ship battles, modular ships, piloting systems. An abduction beam would be just the start.

Wow. Looks like I'm pretty uninformed :O Sorry. I know FTL has existed for a while now, but it was just recently that the game totally blow me away. Has the devs mentioned why they are "done" with ftl? Are they working on another game?

Hopefully mods can come to the iPad. The ability to transfer saves from PC/mac is also pretty cool.
