Great game. Even greater potential

Post by Capt Zadok »

First, I want to say that FTL is a great game. This is the closest game I have ever played that makes you feel like you are commanding your own star ship and crew. I'm playing it on my iPad mini and it's perfect for that device. There is just enough complexity to give you real choices to handle a given situation without turning it into an exercise in micro management. Yes, it is very hard and yes, it does feel at times like the deck is stacked against you to make up for the lack of a truly challenging computer opponent. I can forgive these ”issues” though because it is just plain fun! I do wish that some of the randomly generated non ship to ship events could be played out as well. If I can board a hostile ship, why can’t I explore a space station, or a section/facility on a planet? This would add so much to the game and it seems like the game engine is already set up to handle this. Also, how about different types of missions not just the race across the galaxy one. With this game engine I should be able to search for the lost ______, rescue the ______, or track down the _______. It would also be cool to have the option of playing as a pirate or rebel. It seems to me like there really is no end to the types of missions and adventures that could be added with the same randomly generated events and the perma-death aspect of each play through. I would gladly pay more for more of this type of goodness. Is there any talk of some (hopefully all) of these additions being added?

Welcome to the forums and well. To be honest I don't think they will add anything of the sort. At least no missions inside spacestations and whatever.

A non fleet pursuit sorta infinite mode has been asked many times and it was never done, nor did AE addressed that particular issue. I suppose it's if we take it from the prespective of the developers. This is what they envisoned of their game though I do agree it could have much more.

The modding scene has stepped in and started creating content. There used to be infinite modes and heck, even one where you played as a pirate so there you go.

Of course with AE all of those mods were rendered useless do to the addition of lots of new content. I know one particular mod is still working which is Captains Edition, but it doesn't gives you what you expect. It just adds a bunch more quests, weapons, systems and stuff... It is generally viewed as a great addition though as far as balance goes... Well I haven't played it though what i've seen of it looks to be balanced... But I'm sure it probably has it's issues, even the regular AE has a couple of balance issues anyway.

So all that you can do is wait for the modding scene to step in and get you what you want. That is most likelly going to be your best chance to get what you want out of it. Needless to say though. It probably won't work on Ipad so if you don't have the PC version. You might consider getting it.

The stars cried out
And under the ashes of infinity
Hope, scarred and bleeding breathed it's last."

FTL's engine only allows for one type of mission: The one you play.
The only alternate one is the 'Infinite Space' layout, which I am working on an AE version for.
