i dont see a way to use cheats
it would be cool to have them so. could play other ships or get free weapons or change my crew skill levels.

Only cheat that exists is the profile editor that locks/unlocks ships and achievements. There are also some ridiculously powerfull modships that make the game feel pretty casual, but most of the time the main draw of FTL is that it's unforgiving and cruel, yet there's a way to win or try a diffrent approach next time.
