Continuing the game with taken over enemy ships

I just played my first ever run with the Federation C Cruiser (Normal, Advanced). The very first jump was against an auto-drone that hacked my teleporter. I finally won with 10 hull points remaining. The second combat was against a Zoltan slaver, 3 HP left, but at least I got an extra Mantis. I managed to survive until the second sector, where I finally got killed while both of my mantises were just finishing off the enemy crew of a Rebel Invader. The only consolation was that I imagined that at least they survived and could go on with their lives...

It's when I got this idea : what if you had a game mod(e) where if you managed to take control of an enemy ship, you could decide to continue the game using it!? Eventually transfer some fraction (or all) of crew, fuel, missiles, drone parts, weapons, drones, augments and scrap to the new ship...

Then you could end up beating the Rebels with your very own fleet!! (Ok, I admit I'm going off on a limb there, but I'm starting to imagine a combination of FTL and Sword of the Stars...)

This was one of the most common requests to be added to advanced mode while it was still early during its announcement.

The devs said no straight up because it was just a mechanical thing that would require way too mich reworking the entire mechanics of the game to the point they may as well just make ftl2 =p
