Why not make regular updates for the game???

Post by LittleEndu »

I played the game few years ago and have just recently picked it up again. And after playing it again for few weeks it's getting boring again. Game isn't bad, on the contrary these few weeks have been some of my best, it just lacks replay value.
Some things that would definitely increase replay value are better modding support, infinite gameplay and regular updates.
I just found out that infinite gameplay was going to be in initial release but was set aside because of balance issues. Personally I don't find that to be a problem 'cos game still has so much RNG involved. Just making some harder fights into infinite world should fix balance issues easily.

Now here are some ideas. I just want to put out there to the internet, anybody can use them.

I would like to have more control over the info on hud. Would be good if things like the power consumption had an option to be ether on hud or to be visible and controllable in the system room itself. Would leave up some room for more things I have thought like...

Minimap/radar for co-op traveling. You would be able to select a target window from the minimap and switch between targets if there are multiple, you would also see your allies make impact on your enemies. And maybe even travel around not using the ftl drive

Ships on minimap should also have a way to communicate with them, this would likely have a chance of more events happening on one beacon. If we are already talking about communicating with ships, options like surrendering and trading would be awesome (actual trading system would help modders make things like weapon combiners and stuff not possible to make in current release) Important thing is that when you can choose to communicate with other ships or ignore them you will have less angry rockmen at you :P :P

Please make more room into your cargo (maybe even make this scrollable so that different mods could use different number of cargo and augments slots) and maybe even move this cargo to actual ship so it could get damaged in fights. Would make for some awesome awards for not destroy stuff on enemy ships.
Also having the data on previous beacons and ships seen saved on to computer and then taking damage to the computer would be something awesome to see.

And why is the only way to get to next sector using a long-range beacon. If infinite gameplay is ever made, traveling between sectors should happen on one big universe.

One more idea I have had is something like choose your own adventure style infinite gameplay. Your actions in game would have impact on your reputation, so you could be a trader, a pirate, a mercenary, anything. Other ship near you would choose their actions accordingly. Those in need for weapons would surely try to buy some from you, civilians would stay away from pirate ships and so on...

Oh and I almost forgot, need more music :D

So for finish, here is tl;dr version. Is there going to be more content after the FTL:AE? Will we ever see official infinite gameplay add-on? And surely i forgot something and will add more ideas later, FTL is still one of my favorite games and having my ideas not heard is killing me :D :D

Lemme fix the TLDR for you:

I know the free expansion, which other game studios would call "FTL 2" and make us pay for, isn't even out yet, but you guys should release some free updates.

One of the reasons they don't have regular updates is simply because this game is made by two people. Even just creating AE in a reasonable amount of time was a challenge for them, having regular updates (e.g once every 2-3 months) would be almost impossible for them. Some of the stuff you are suggesting, like the radar and co-op gameplay, is VERY hard to implement into a game that's already been created. They would need to re-write a lot of code. Infinite gameplay isn't to hard to implement, and I believe they will still implement it at some point in the future. In the meantime, you could check out the Infinite space mod. (and the upcoming Infinite space two mod!! ).

Just to clarify, by co-op I meant that like if you are escorting ships, they would fight with you. And actually making something like radar would only require developers to take out the turn based traveling and replace that with more or less real-time one. Simulation would be more demanding on CPU, but modern day computers should be able to handle that.
And now if i come to think about it, AE comes with many new features (clones, mind control, hacking) which all would have been fine to release individually. Hopefully people still come and revisit the game :)

They have also said they will never support modding as making the game and expansion is hard enough as it is.

um.. do you actually realize how hard it would be to replace the turn based traveling and replace it with a semi-real time travel system? that would require a MASSIVE re-write of the game's code and would probably be harder than creating the entire ftl:ae update.

idk. To make the game real-time simulation with co-op they would just have to:
  • use original map generation
  • Allow for free movement
  • take out the code where events happen when you have jumped to beacon
  • replace that with events happening when you have moved close to them (like have a blinking ! somewhere on the ship)
  • add simple A.I. to other ships. Something like ships having the same events, just interacting with a ship would all start with same options.
Doesn't sound so MASSIVE to me. The code would have to be really messy for it to be not changeable like this. It may take time, but i t should not be difficult.

To make cars fly all one would have to do:
put some wings on them
make them flap real hard
add some simple AI to avoid mid-air collisions
paint a shark's face on the front

If only the original car design wasn't so damn messy.

You forgot the part where one will remove the wheels...
If you guys cant say anything for sure like agigabyte did then why not stop assuming and making bad jokes.

Said by someone who clearly hasn't made so much as an IF THEN statement in their life...

It's not a joke. It's a direct analogy to how ridiculous the things you are saying.

Here is a tip about coding, even freaking "Hello World!" is a massive project.
