Changing out titles and art

So, just for the heck of it I was thinking it'd be fun to change some of the names of the aliens and stuff like that, and have found them in the data.dat file, but when I change them and boot up the game it goes through the loading screen and immediately quits. Just wondering what I'm doing wrong. Likewise I was wanting to change some of the ship art but can't find it.

On a mac, if that makes much of a difference.

Someone made a program for extracting the assets so you can edit them.

Thanks! I've looked it over and I'm not sure exactly what to do. I've downloaded the files but I'm not sure how to get what to unpack the data.dat file. Could it be because I'm on a mac and the procedure may be different?
