How to create a copy of the game for modding?

Post by CallMeAdam »

Hi, I'm just wondering if it's possible to create another copy of the game that I can mod. I am seriously enjoying the game, I think it's amazing, and I'm progressing. Anyhow, I've been looking into mods and how they can corrupt savefiles or whatever, and I have the crystal cruiser (A and B! :D ) and don't exactly want all those hours gone in minutes. So what I'm asking is "is it possible to create a copy of the game without corruption?" I've tried loads, and tested continuing with slight change, then testing the other one to see if it's effected that savefile. How? I've tried moving the folder to my desktop, copying it and pasting it (so there's two folders) and creating a shortcut from each one. That didn't work. If you have any methods of doing this please post, and sorry for waffling a bit.

Thanks in Advance, ~Adam :)

Actually simply copying the game folder will work. The reason it wasn't apparent is because your profile (and savegame if there is one) is kept separately.

You certainly can and should copy your game folder and proceed to destroy the copy with mods and whatnot. :D I recommend it. Both the copy and the original game will use the same profile, and if you unlock achievements with a modded version, those will be available in the unmodded game as well.

Your profile should be in /Users/<username>/My Documents/My Game/Faster Than Light. No matter how many copies of FTL you have on your PC they will all load this one profile.

Thanks! I feel kinda stupid right now because I tried the complex things without really thinking about what would be the obvious thing to do... I've got the mods up and running now. :D
