It would be cool if you could have a more heavily armed version of a race specially designed for combat with inability to level up when controlling ship systems and do repairs much slower but are more resistant to fires(additional armor). They could be hired as mercenaries in shops with each soldier's race giving defferent advantages and disadvantages(but even the marines of the races who are weak at fighting aren't weaker than the other soldiers)
here are the general directions for perks in each race's marines(not 100% balanced or final):
Human space marine: does 40% more damage than noncombat human
equipped with an energy shield suit that has a 35% chance of deflecting all damage from each shot
Mantis warrior :additional strapon weapons
does 45%more damage than regular mantis(ultimate damage dealer) but 40% less speed and 20% chance of instantly dying due to weapons exploding
zoltan soldier: gets 20% more HP and can sap energy from enemy weapons weakening damage dealt and increasing own damage out put by 10,20 or 30%(depends on how many enemies are in the room)
engi marine: gets 50% more damage and can self heal
slug boarder: does 35% more damage and slows down enemies in neighboring rooms and has a 40% chance to mind disrupt an enemy causing him to momentarily engage another enemy unit(cheap less effective mind control)
rock warrior: motor suit-
25% more movement speed
area effect grenades- does equal damage to 2 enemies at once
20% more damage
While they may seem OP keep in mind that they're very specialized units and unlike the vanilla variants of other races they can't do other things adequately than fight and lose all noncombat abilities of regulars.
Please suggest if any different perks are more adequate for the different races.

Re: [suggestion]add combat versions for each species
I get where you're coming from with this suggestion, but I think it really would be OP in reality. The problem is that boarding can already be a bit OP already. To counter that, most ships would have to carry extra "combat" versions of races. So then if you ever wanted to do ANY successful boarding, you would also have to carry some extra "combat" boarders. And when you got boarded by "combat" troops and you didn't have any combat troops, you'd be slaughtered. So again, you'd be forced to hire them just for security.
It'd be an arms race but I'm not sure if it'd actually add any fun to the game. I think it'd just make boarding less common and force you to have a couple of otherwise useless crew members clogging up your roster.

I think Mantises would be insulted if you told them they weren't good enough in combat.

seeing how a mantis can take out 4 engi's alone (all same level), yes, he will be insulted. (yes, there just engi, but that is another x2 damage coming the mantis way due to 4 engi's and a total of 400 health to go through with each 100 reducing damage of engi by .5, that is an achievement for the mantis)

Now you know why they invented medbots.

And now you know why the Mantis Ambush event is so annoying for boarding ships... not only do you have to board on a ship with mantis on it, but it's an engi ship, medbots + mantis + defense drone shooting down boarding drones and also repair drone (possibly).... What else can be worse for your boarding play through?
