I have invested 47 hours into FTL and still haven't got that Crystal Cruiser. Sometimes i got the pod, but that's the furthest i ever got. Step 2 and 3 never happened for me due to bad luck.
I even tried that tweak mod which increases the chances to get the pod, but it doesn't work for me.
I unlocked all other ships, just that single one is missing.
Yes, i could cheat by modifying my savegame, but that would be wrong, since i want to get it by myself.
It's just so very, very, very frustratingly depending on luck and i seem to not be very lucky.

Re: Crystal Cruiser Blues
I played over 100 games, 90% of them only through the first sector until I saw that there was no chance in subsequent sectors. I played on Easy mode and did no fighting. I played the Rock cruiser and did my best to follow every guideline to get the ship.
On my last run, I got the pod, got it open (getting the crystal dude), and got to the rock homeworld. I hit every single jump point I could but never found the gateway to the secret sector. This was, of course, before the new version where you at least get a quest marker.
At that point I figured it was the game that was cheating and not me, so I downloaded a profile editor and unlocked the ship. I feel NO shame at all for it. I put more than a fair amount of time into it and failed due to no fault of my own except not having an infinite amount of spare time. Had I not done that, I'd have likely quit playing the game in disgust.

Re: Crystal Cruiser Blues
It is a tough ship to get. I wasn't so quick to beat the game initially, so frustrated with that, for a while I just played to unlock ships (all on Easy). The Crystal ship took the most missions, I'm sure, many aborted when I had no Rock Homeworlds on my path. Also the Rock A is frustrating in itself, because you need to get energy weapons or run out of missiles. (Yes, you don't need to use it, but I was also trying to unlock the B ship, and since I wasn't succeeding at "Is it warm in here?", I was going for "Ancestry.")
I finally gave up trying on my own, and looked for tips on how to get it. Then after more frustration, I installed the mod to help. Still took many missions after that, as the RNG just may decree that you can't get to the Rock Homeworlds. Or maybe the Rock Homeworlds come before you find the pod.
What a relief it was to finally have things fall into place in the right order, so I got Ancestry and the Rock B, and then the Crystal A.

All I can say is keep at it. I got mine Saturday at about 65 hours played (granted, the first 10 or so I had no idea what I was doing in terms of ship unlocks, I was just blindly going through the game and having fun). The very next run, I got through the entire sequence again.
RNG is a fickle mistress, but eventually you'll win.

It's just luck, and persevering. I never went all out to get it - I never quit when the warp nodes weren't lined up right. I got the beta, which added a quest marker in the rock homeworlds (I had a couple of attempts previously when I didn't find it
), and just did loads or runs in the rock ships. My most amusing ragequit failure was when I was in the rock homeworlds, and sent my crystal guy into a burning room with a couple of rock boarders, and hit lockdown - I had just assumed crystals were immune to fire too. It wasn't amusing at the time.

Re: Crystal Cruiser Blues
*1 week later*
If it's any consolation it could be worse - I enjoy FTL so much (it's nice to play while watching TV or multitasking) that I've racked up 430 hours of play since I bought it last October (perhaps a lot of those hours were me leaving the game on pause and going AFK, I'm not THAT obsessed, but whatever).
After about 390 hours of play, and not being lucky enough to get the crystal cruiser, I decided to backup my old savegame file and start a second savegame... Only to get every ship except for the slug cruiser within a week of starting again, including the crystal cruiser. "Hooray" I said, and played with the crystal cruiser for about 14 playthroughs... Until there was a problem with the Steam cloud and my second savegame file accidentally got overwritten by the last backup of my first.
That was a month ago and I've had 25-30 games in the Mantis ship and still not been lucky enough to get the crystal cruiser again. Bah.
Oh well, gives me a goal to keep playing for.

i was very lucky, i found the stasis pod, the next sector was a rock home world, it took 2 jumps to get to the quest and 1 jump in the crystal sector to get the ship

Re: Crystal Cruiser Blues
I consider myself incredibly lucky. I hadn't even managed to unlock the rock, slug or mantis ships and I had just finished my first playthrough on normal. I had around 50 hours played when I ran into the pod for the second time.
Luckily I was playing my fresh new stealth cruiser so I managed to safely fly to the crystal homeworld. There I encountered an event in which I was supposed to defuse a bomb or lose a crew member. I think I let a few droplets of sweat roll off by forehead before I cut the wire... And succeeded!
One more jump to the quest marker and that was it! Now I've just got to unlock the rest, using my cool new piece of sweet luck. ^^
Oh and by the way.. I also managed to unlock the stealth cruiser B on that run.
I wish you guys luck with it. I'd say that you shouldn't sweat it but just enjoy the game. Makes it all much more rewarding IMO.

Have fun with the Stealth B cruiser, it's probably the most damned difficult ship to keep alive in the beginning.
