how to power down weapons

How do you power down weapons? If I have power allocated to a weapon I can't find any way to make that weapon inactive so I can use the power somewhere else. An exception is if I run out of missiles mid-battle I get that power freed up. Surely I am missing something really simple. Thanks in advance for your replies.

Is it just not possible? If so, that seems like a flaw in the game but maybe that is how it is.

Right-click with the mouse does it. Only exception is power from a Zoltan crew which will only power the first weapon.
