This is a screenshot of my loadout at...what, end of sector 4 or 5?
It was nuts. Everything died in 2-3 volleys, boss included.

Yeah, my first victory happened when I managed to get THREE Burst Mk2s. Made the game a breeze, and man it's beautiful to see so many lasers at once.

Or just play a certain red Layout B ship. 
Don't even need weapons, except to kill drones and the Flagship. Of the three runs I recall, two started out with BL III in the first sector (I know BL III isn't worth the DPS, but it's good scrap) , and the latest one was two Ion II and Fire + Anti-Bio Beam.
Incidentally, I've never gotten two or more BL II on a single ship.
