Had my first win on Normal mode today. With the Kestrel no less.
By the time I got to the flagship I had three laser mark II, for a total of nine shots per volley, and a heal burst and auto-reload. My boarding crew was a rock and mantis at lvl 2 fight, and I had lvl 2 crew on all stations, plus a slug and a zoltan.
lvl 4 and 5 shields...no sweat. I could usually disable all weapons before they could even get a shot off. I would knock out guns, then med bay, then board, and let my fighters pick off the rest.
Grabbed full cloak and full power in sector 7 and early 8. Tore the flagship to pieces. The only bad part of the run is when I accidentally sent my mantis over without the rock and he died before I could get him back, but by then the flagship was pretty much dead anyway.
Man I love this game. Best $10 I ever spent on a video game.

Re: Finally won on normal
Congrats!
I also recently won on normal!
Endgame ship:
KESTREL CRUISER(1st ship in the game)
Augmentations: 2x 15% less cooldown before shots(not sure) ,1 repair when getting scrap
4 crew members. Two of them had 2 stars(Weapons and Piloting) and 1 of them had 1(Engine).
The reactor was maxed out.
6 shield levels(3 shields), 4 engine levels(45% evasion i believe),7 Weapons levels(Artemis,Burst Laser 2,2x Burst laser 1),4 drones levels(1 defense1 drone,1 hull repair drone and 1 anti ship 1 drone in the cargo),2 door levels, 2 sensors levels
All of those could have been powered at once.
I had a lot of Fuel,35 missiles and about 20 drone parts. Had no problems with the first two boss forms mostly hitting the shield. The third got my health to half before i managed to disable both of it's weapons and finally managed to defeat it.
I was a beginner to this style of games. Took me 61 tries all on normal to finish it. I usually restart after 1st,2nd or even 3rd beacon if i'm unlucky so about 2/3 of the retries weren't complete.High Score 4160!

Re: Finally won on normal
At last! Used the Osprey (layout A), after several attempts realized taking down shields as top priority worked better. Made sure I got to a sector exit before the Rebel cavalry showed up. Hadn't enjoyed teleporter use before, but was a blast this time: nothing like sending over "the twins" (a pair of Mantis) to distract enemy crews from fixing junk I was either blasting or ion-bombing... imagine two Starship Trooper "bugs" let loose on the Enterprise.
Final ship loadout at Sector 8:
Weapons -- Pair of Burst Laser MkII and Ion Bomb. Glaive (I know, a lucky find) in the fourth slot, which I powered-up (and turned off the lasers) only when enemy shields were weakened or ionized.
Augments -- Pre-igniter, Med nanobots, shield recharger.
Drones -- Hull repair and Defense 1
Full crew (all eight, with specialists manning their stations... only bought one, all others were rescued from slavers--why pay more?)
The boss was quick to dispatch. Waited 'til its cloak expired, then the twins 'ported over to disable the tri-missiles, hammered the shields, ionized the helm or other systems, then enjoyed watching the glaive and artillery beam make the final slices.
Love this game! Now back to work...
