Have I just been really unlucky?
Read the guide on how to unlock all the ships. Did that after maybe 10 hours played. Been trying to unlock just a single ship for 15 more hours now and still no luck.
Does the RNG hate me that much or is this normal?

I direct you to LONCHIVAR's chronicled attempts at unlocking the secret ship.. No I don't think you've been unusually unlucky!
Is it a particular ship you've been trying to unlock? You said you've read a guide on it but I wonder if there's maybe something else you could be trying to get what you're after.

The first ship you want to unlock of course is the one you earn for defeating the Rebel Flagship.
Have you done that heroic deed yet?

Actually the first is Engi: you get it for arriving in sector 5 I believe.

It took me about 40-50 restarts to unlock it (though maybe 1/3-1/2 of that was sector-1 restarts upon seeing that the distribution of sectors was impossible for the quest). Just keep trying!
