Best start ever?

Post by Dontmindme »

I just started a new game (Kestral A).

First jump, free weapon -- Ion Blast II (Which combined with the starting Burst Laser I is enough firepower to beat the boss)
Second jump, storage cache, pop the rebel ship -- Hull Laser I.

Quality end game weapons in two jumps? I find this hard to beat...

Just started, but I'll win. Got my 50 scrap and shields 2, it's pretty much in the bag. Still in Sector 1 and got a Heavy Laser 1 to add to the arsenal.

I once got pre-igniter and burst laser II in sector one and a hull beam and pike beam before sector five in the kestrel.

Two burst laser II and two beam weapons was pretty awesome, added in a few drones to make sure I always got through shields easy in order to apply the beam weapons. :>

Ofcourse, this was the ship on which I reached the boss the first time and I totally failed on the third phase. Had some unlucky dodges on the first pre-ignite volley and couldnt get through the supershields in time before the boss missiled my weapons bay. But hey, shit happens. First time I defeated the boss was on the Red-Tail with a similar weapon set up bit instead of drones I had teleporter and cloak. Worked much better. :>

Tally so far into Sector 3...
Found:
Ion Blast II
2x Hull Laser I
Heavy Laser I
Hull Beam
2x Burst Laser I
Hull Laser II

Never seen this many free weapons...

Things calmed down after that, rest of the way
Pike Beam
Ion Bomb
Breach Missile

Not unusual for 4+ sectors.

Game went well, but I started making mental lapses mid-game. Lost 4 crew members from mistakes.
Lost 2 with late retrieval for healing.
Forgot to turn O2 back on (borrowed the power to better the chances of evading a missile) and the guy who had repaired a breach died. Guess he was the canary...
Lost another who got hit by a missile after repairing a fire and damage.

One battle kept missing the missile going off so didn't cloak it. Took 20 damage that battle. Hate those 3 damage missiles a lot more than the 4 damage ones. The 4 damage you can just about "short cloak" all of them.

That said even with wasted repair scrap and crew purchases. Still had more than enough to wipe the boss with little damage. I actually bought a Fire Bomb, so burned the ship in Stage 3 for the fire achievement.

Didn't mention it, but this was the first game on my laptop after I reinstalled the game. Decided I wanted a fresh experience with the joys of achievements and opening up ships. Also decided I wanted to do all of these "as the game was intended to be played by the developers". I.e. Normal without beacon paths.

Despite all the crew losses, still got all the Kestral Achs (found the right crew, chose sectors to find slugs and engi) and unlocked the Zoltan ship.

It was a good run, the lack of beacon paths didn't hurt much. Just played it a lot safer and steered to areas where beacons were more clumped together.
