Suggestion: Modding!

Hello! I'm a big fan of FTL and can not wait to get my hands on it when it finally releases to us less fortunate Kickstarter backers. I've spent a few too many hours watching Let'sPlays already. :oops:

What I want to ask about today is modding! I think FTL has great potential for some basic user content creation. While events, weapons, quests, etc are probably much too deep in the game to be easily changed, I propose supporting custom ships. Players could be able to configure a ship from an image and build a layout/properties for using it in the game and exporting for other players to enjoy. It would extend the life of the game and, in theory, be relatively easy to implement.*

*It's hard to judge without the game files for reference.


Short of that, it would be really cool to unlock every NPC ship for your hangar when beating the game on normal or higher. All the ones with 02 systems, anyway....

I actually like the idea of slightly customizeable player ships. Maybe once you unlock ALL the ships, the last slot unlocks and that is a customizeable ship slot. Give us 'resource points' that we are able to spend on items, each item having a set point value, so that all in all every ship will be about equal, but you can design them for specific strengths while sacrificing other weaknesses (like the Tarus, it only has ion weapons but starts with Drone Control and an Anti Ship Drone, pretty handy but the starting weapons don't help a lot on their own)

And give us access to EVERY ship model except for the final boss, let us make the ship look however we like, because that's just Aesthetics. (and I really want a Rockman ship, I love them.)

I believe the devs has already looked into doing that, but found that it was too hard to make it work. It was too likely that a player would make a ship configuration that was totally impossible to win with or something.
