Greetings FTL forums! The name's MoD1982, but feel free to call me MoD.

I had a quick poke around and didn't see anywhere to properly introduce myself, so I may as well throw myself in at the deep end and showcase some FTL videos!

This first playthrough was also my first livestream, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Such a fun way to play games with friends; FTL has great potential for interaction with friends! Question for anybody who may have watched the videos posted in the previous post.

I have a total of 67 views for episode 1. It then drops to a mighty 5 for episode 2. What am I doing wrong that's making people turn off halfway through episode 1 and not want to watch more? Please give me some feedback here guys, if I'm genuinely doing something wrong then let me know so I can put it right in future uploads.

First things first, this is entirely my opinion so feel free to take it or leave it as you will.

I think your videos are mostly fine. There are a couple little things I noticed in the episode that might be turning people off though, the big one being dead airtime. For example, in part 6, you go from 3:20 to 3:36 without saying a word, and people tend to get bored pretty easily if there's nothing going on. Beyond that, you might want to watch out for your monologue being a bit flat. You talk about the things that are happening with no problems, but your voice is very monotone some of the time, which isn't the most engaging in my opinion.

Something to keep in mind, though, is that a lot of people only watch the first episode of things unless they really catch their attention. A lot of my series have way more views on episode 1 than any other. Don't let it bother you!

Edit: Also, almost your entire first video (by which I mean 10/23 minutes) is spent looking at the ship menu, which often isn't what people want to watch. Do most of the people who abandon ship do so before or after you get out of the menus?

I had suspected as much about the dead airtime, but in my defence with regards to the 10 minutes worth of hangar time(did I really? That was a bit daft if I did!) I was livestreaming that particular run to some friends who've never seen FTL before so hoped I could go through things for them and try to explain what's what about the game.
Monotone voice, hmm... so maybe a bit more passion to be put into it, maybe? Or just mix things up a bit when commentating? Okay, I can try and do something about that too.
You've given me plenty to think about and work with, so I don't think I can express my gratitude enough other than to say thank you again!


More Red-Tail footage here for everyone, by the way. This run wasn't livestreamed, it was recorded locally a week ago so Vanguard's feedback won't be addressed until I make another playthrough - but please watch, like etc etc. You know the drill with these videos by now

That might not have been the best way to explain it, but the general gist was that you just don't always sound particularly interested in what is going on (as you go through result pages and what not) and if you aren't interested, then what is there to keep your audience interested?

Also, explaining what is going on in the hangar isn't necessarily a bad thing - I do it in the first episode of each of my runs, so that people can learn a bit about the ship, how to unlock it, what makes it special, etc - but you generally want to keep it to a reasonable limit, and a big thing I found helped was giving people the option to skip it entirely if they're not interested. That way they can't really reasonably be annoyed by the time you spend beforehand, because you gave them the opportunity to avoid it.

Alrighty, I think I get what you mean now Many thanks for the advice, it's perhaps a lil too late to apply it to the Red Tail run, but the next recording I make I shall try and be more engaging.
