Shields training

Post by DocGratis »

I assume that shield training works like weapon training in that they have to be recharging the shield... (thus why weapons training goes so quickly, cause they charge so quickly)...

So does hanging out in an asteroid field allow you to train up shield skill?

Anyone know already? Or have any bets? cause I had to leave a game to go work, so I left it unpaused in an asteroid field.. so my shield operator will have about 8 hours of asteroids pinging off the sheild, recharging the sheild and then another random asteroid pinging off the shield... goto 10... risen and repeat
Weapons Officer "Aww do we really NEED 02 and Medbay? I want more weapon power"
Shields and Engine Officers "Yeah we want more power!"

I'm going to guess that your pilot, engines, and shield will probably all be gold when you get back.

That or dead.

I did actually think about pulling the weapons officer and other crew into key areas for repair.. to late now.. I hope they aren't dead I finally have a two matis boarding party they have been doing a great job.. You know how stressful it is to capture ships in a nebula? :o

I asked this question in another thread...

The answer is no, from someone who already tried it. You have to be in ship to ship combat.

That said, in the first or second sector you should be able to find an enemy that can't penetrate your shields. You can then exchange fire with them for a while, using a small laser or an ion canon.

I am currently in a fight with shield 3 and enemy having lasers only.
Every time they hit me one of two happens:
a) I evade, and both piloting and engines guy gain one experience. Max is 30 for each of them.
b) I do not evade, lose shield point, and when it is regenerated, shields guy gains one xp. Max is 120 for him.

When I fire any of my weapons, my weapons guy gains 1 XP. His max is 70.

I will report from what I see outside of combat.

When I sent my mantis+rockman to the enemy ship, they did not gain any XP until the mantis was almost dead and I had to beam them back. They even killed a guy.

This brings up the question... can you train piloting/engine/shield against an opponent that only has beam weapons that can't pierce shields?

With a Engi crew member manning shields in an asteroid field, his skill increased.

I haven't tried other races; but it definitely works for Engi.
