404: The Killer Quest

Post by Mr.Mafia »

"As the name says I was killed by a quest. No no an event didn't kill my last crew member or anything like that... Here I'll tell you the story... It was the first sector..."

"It was late for me, very late. In fact I was thinking of making this my last game before I went to sleep, I hit the replay button to start anew with my crewmembers, EM, MG, and RJ. Only this time, I planned on doing things differently. It wasn't long before I adopted a new crew member. A Mantis to be precise. I stuck him in the room where I planned on installing a boarding pad. I thought I was off to a good start, my first beacon, and instant Mantis. Boy was I in a good mood. I had a good feeling about this game... Was I wrong... The second jump in and I got a quest! A quest that would divert me from my planned path, but I went along with it anyway. It looked like you could easily jump from the quest beacon to the exit beacon with ease. (ding) I was nearly killed in an ion storm half way there. (ding) When I finally made it to the quest beacon, it turned out to be a dud. I only got some scraps. I thought nothing of it until I looked at the jump screen, I swear to god it was bearly any distance between the quest beacon and the closest beacon to the exit. I couldn't jump! I was stuck! I was going to be forced to tred all the way across the level to get to the exit beacon! I was furious! Anyway, I quickly died in the ion storm on the way back  "

"I have no proof or pictures of this happening, but whether you believe it or not this is still an interesting tale of rage."

"Oh and as a final insult the game decided to give me a score of '404' "

Moral of the story: turn on the "show adjacent beacons" option.

Meh, the "show adjacent beacons" options is ultimate Easy mode if you ask me. Getting dead-ended and having to jump back through multiple Rebel battles with no rewards is one of the better ways the game has of seriously messing you up just when things were going so well.

Turning it on takes away a big chunk of the risk/reward aspect of the game, for example: Great, a store just when I needed it/have scrap to spend, but hmmm, it's a little isolated and takes me further from the exit, do I risk it? It may have that Burst Laser MkII, OR, going there might get me killed...

With show adjacent beacons on, there's no decision to be made, is there? What next, an option where you can see the outcomes of the giant spider & riot events before you choose?

You're probably right, I'm only saying you shouldn't turn it off and then complain about the outcome, like OP.

Actually you're wrong. There's still a choice. If you're skimming the edge of the rebel fleet, there's a risk that going to the wrong beacon will get you in a lot of trouble.

I'm not denying that it makes things easier, but it doesn't remove ALL the risk of jumping. I frequently get stuck on the exit beacon fighting a rebel because I overestimated my ship's speed in comparison to them.

How does that happpen accidently with show adjacent beacons on? You can SEE where the rebel fleet are going to be before you choose the next jump on the map and you can plan your route to the exit well in advance, so unless you are choosing to fight their ships for extra beacon/ships destroyed score it is easy to stay ahead of them. Too easy.

meh, it is hard to see where they are going to be in 6 jumps, or even 3.

i was positively annoyed until i found i could turn on star paths, any captain worth his salt should be able to do that.

being said, i still sometimes get stuck on a long path to no where even being able to look ahead. i tend to plan many ahead, but only look one or two. usually the poor captain that did this died for it.

"You get me wrong I wasn't complaining, I was raging. Theres a thin line between the two.
But in the case of this game why would I complain when dying is half the fun?"
EDIT:
"Also I have no idea how to turn on that option you told me about, I've checked the option menu and everything. It was probably added in the latest version and I just haven't updated yet :P Not that I would turn it on regardless."
