Are there any sources of lore for the FTL universe beyond that which is revealed in game? I know the game itself was designed pretty 'bottom up' (you can see it in the code: "I don't know who uses these jellyfish ships yet"), but I am writing a mod (already have the first ship, posted on this board) about the rise of the federation and would like additional canonical information. Failing that, SPECULATION TIME!
It always seemed to me that the humans, engi, and zoltan would have been the founders of the federation. The mantis strike my as FTL's klingons/pirates/proud-warrior-race, the rock as FTL's big dumb brutes, and the slugs as slavers/hedonists/merchants (ferengi + hutt?).
Edit: Oh, and the rock obviously have something of a priestly element to them.
Thoughts?

Not sure about the lore, but wouldn't the Crystal have to be included? They seem to play a major part in FTL's story.

Definitely! I just haven't done that quest yet and don't want to read about it on the wikis before I do...

The story is eerily similar to Homeworld 1, both in lore and game mechanics.

The best source for lore is real life history. You can peice togethor what you see in history with what you see in game dialogue. Its a mix of dialouge and logic. Ive already figured it out for myself but just remember than not all of humanity has to be one faction. I think that it was less of a rebellion and more of a large human faction within the federation seceding, which led to other seccessions within the federation. When the federation tried to retake those sectors with force, the factions unified and began a civil war, much like the american civil war.
