FTL Tips from hardcore fans!

Some things in FTL are out there for the hardcore fans, the absolute achievers. Some of those things could be of use to new players! So if you have any advanced tips, such as a better way to prioritize system upgrades, better battle strategies, things to avoid, or even an easy way to get your hands on a new ship that you learned while playing for a while, then here's your place. There actually might not be anything that hasn't been already mentioned, but I may as well try.
Here's something to start with:
Cloaking is commonly hailed as a staple, but a few of my 7 wins have gone without it. Just make sure you have better-than-average dodge, good and quick weapons that'll eliminate huge threats quickly, and a really good plan, and it's perfectly achievable.
