I usually end up with a fairly high surplus of scrap when I get a teleport up early so I can start invading enemy ships to get the most scrap for them. Are you playing on easy, or normal?

If you want to get loads of scrap in the least random possible fashion, that's the best way to do it. Especially if you are lucky enough to get an early ship that you weapon lock so you can power level all of your crew in combat.

This game needs a Hardcore mode, methinks...

Not using pause is fairly hard, if you want to try that to see how things goes.

I don't really use the pause option that much, only when there's a huge fire breaking loose on my ship (solar waves are fun!) or there's enemies boarding my ship with my sensors down and they're more than 2, had one of those events where they board from an unknown location and they were like 6...
