What were you doing beforehand? Were you running any mods?

No mods. I was just playing the third scenario where you have to find Anya(?) when I got the message.

I have received the Dyson popup twice and both times selected 'We need the weapons more than Dyson does'.

This caused the game to generate a black screen and hang both times.

I can't say that I am a great admirer of zombie games but this one is fun

Zombie game? I think you're in the wrong forum for help with your game. This is FTL: Faster Than Light.
The only zombie encounter I know of is when you find an abandoned space station and get attacked by rampaging cannibals.
