In sector 1 I found a pre-igniter in a shop, and had *just* enough to buy it.
In sector 2 I came across the stasis pod (piloting rock ship), and bought a crew teleporter.
In sector 3 I found a shop with BOTH a burst laser III & a glaive beam, and I had *just* enough to buy them both. (sold everything except the stasis pod & preigniter)



Everything was looking awesome; I had brilliant weapons, a great long-term setup, 5 crew (4xrockmen+1engi), and the arrangement of the sectors gave me a good chance of unlocking the crystal cruiser....

Then, in sector 4 I monumentally f**ked up



- First I had a random boarding event comprising 4 mantis; I mismanaged my troops & got one of my rockmen killed.
- Next fight I accidentally auto-fired my glaive into a ship I was boarding; bye bye 2 more rockmen.
- Then I came across an escape pod in deep space; out bursts a mantis cutting my engi in half.
- Finally I jump near a Sun.... and am boarded by 3 humans who run amok through my ship. Eventually they die from asphyxiation, but not before utterly crippling my ship.

I did manage to get the "They didn't see it coming" achievement though

And you have no one but yourself to blame, as it wouldn't have been that bad if it wasn't for auto-firing your weapons when you had a boarder on the enemy ship.

Oh, autofire... How often you make us regret using you.

That kind of thing always sucks, but at least you got a good story out of it!

FTL definitely likes to balance out the luck it gives you. Too much good luck and you just know you're going to get hit by a pair of breach missiles in the weapons and helm while being boarded at a sun.

That's a touch pessimistic. It only happens once or twice in every three games, tops.
