Having a hard time with the Rift Walkers

Hi,
I beat the game (four islands) on hard with most Squads.
But the Rift Walkers are really giving me a hard time.
Can you give me some advice? I've unlocked every pilot.
I'm especially bad at positioning my mechs at the beginning of the match. I just look not to get bound by the vek (by checking their range) and have my artillery on a tile with good movement options.
