Using just an installed ship mod

First, I apologize if this question has been asked and answered repeatedly. I've tried searching the crap outta this, but I must not be getting the verbiage right, so I'll try and do so here.

I've downloaded a ship mod (say the <<W-Class Fighter {ALPHA)>> in the Master Mod Advanced Mod list for example). It's properly installed thru SlipStream (only say this cause all other ftl's are functioning just fine) When I start a new game the default starting ship shows up and no other ship. Do I simply need to unlock all the other ships in order to see the modded one? I've only unlocked one at at this time. I've also grabbed many ships from the list above, all excited to try them ;) but none appear to be showing up in FTL as usable. One did and the description said it replaced the starting ship (which makes sense why that one works)

To those that take the time to read an help out a new FTL'er gamer thanks, to those that roll their eyes to the same asked question...I apologize again ;)

Did you download all the ships at once and install them or did you just install them one at a time? Because some ship mods are not compatible with each other and/or sometimes include the Vanilla ships in them for some unexplained reason.

Hey~ (and thanks for reaching out)

I did install just the one ship mod. I didn't notice (and I may have overlooked) any special or needed pre requisites for any of the ship mods.
I'm running the AE version from GOG. And I'm "assuming" because I downloaded the ship mod from the AE mod section that it's compatible with the AE version and not just the older one.

Yes, different ship mods replace different ship layouts, though it's common to just replace the Kestrel, too. The W Fighter seems to replace Kestrel B, looking at the image in the thread.

You can either unlock the ship, change the relevant variable in the mod file, or use something like my small utility mod for it. It's not perfect, but it should always work for single ship mods (I was not aware how many ship mods overwrote the same myship files at the time, but you don't need to worry about that if you only use one of them), and should usually work for many other ships:
