I've played the game quite awhile now and I only have two ships -- and I can't find any kind of readme file that tells you the things you need to do to unlock ships -- I have done quests but never get an unlocked ship as a reward. How do you unlock ships?

If you click on the LIST button from the Hangar screen you will be taken to a screen that serves as both a quick way to select a ship to play with and also to inform you how to unlock all ships and layouts if you hover your mouse pointer over the unlocked ships' silhouette. You can also access this screen from the Stats screen by selecting the "Ship Best" tab, handy for when you are in the middle of a game and thus cannot go to the hangar without losing your current game and just want to check on a certain hint.

As it turns out, I just played a game and ended up unlocking two ships. : )
