Since the game was released, FTL: AE is the only time I know of that events have been added to the game. It may be the last major update for FTL, as I don't recall any 'expansions' even being planned in the way back when.

There's no way to know for absolute certain one way or the other.
Even if Matt & Justin said they were calling it 'done,' that doesn't necessarily mean they wouldn't return to build on FTL at a later time.
As I understand it though, AE was mostly "cut content" - concepts they wanted to include originally, or that had been requested numerous times (like the "return to stations" button). It's very likely that AE is the "final" version of FTL, and unless something new is announced, your best bet for any future content is likely to be through modding.

I would like to think that we, the community, can provide some of this through Mods. Many games have very long life spans, not because the devs have the time (or the willpower to work on the same project for years on end) but because the community provided new experiences.

I'm hoping they're working on something new. Most game devs have tons of good ideas, it's just a question of what they end up implementing.

I e-mailed them and they said it's done.

Advanced Edition itself was a surprise to me. The devs sounded tired of working on the game in an interview back when FTL came out. At this point, I bet a different game inspired by FTL is more likely to happen than a sequel by Subset anytime soon.
