Suggestion: Escape Pods?

What if you could buy an Escape Pod subsystem that gave you a chance of saving some of your (leveled-up) crew to reuse when you restart?

Something that allowed crew to transcend a single run would be VERY welcome!!!
Crew of ships that (i)finish the game or (ii)get to an escape pod should go into a roster and be available to swap into new ships to replace some or all of the usual starting crews of those ships. It could be as simple as that, and it would be awesome.
1.) It would allow you to have an attachment to something that grew over a longer time than just one run.
2.) It could save you the trouble of finding a weak enemy in sector 1 or 2 who can't penetrate your shield and letting them shoot at you for a super long time to train your new crew in every game. =P
3.) Maybe if you win the game one crew member could be promoted to a captain. Only one captain allowed per ship, and he/she could have slightly have more complicated stats than your original crew members - maybe something extra like "leadership", or the opportunity to specialize in one other system even beyond the normal two-star max level? I would love this, and I think it really fits the FTL vision/style.

Someone postet a similar idea at
getsatisfaction. The developers consider adding it.
