Still fairly new to the game, but I was playing the Zoltan ship and got the Glaive & Weapon Pre-Igniter combo in sector 2 last night...wow! I don't think I took any damage until sector 5. I didn't even worry about defensive upgrades until sector 5. For sectors 5 through 7 I added a 3 shot laser to weaken the shields a bit, and used the 4 second recharge ion weapon and a bomb for the boss. (I did push the shields to 3 and engines to 6 in the latter sectors just in case)

This was my easiest run through yet. Since I took almost no damage the first 5 sectors, I had plenty of scrap for upgrades and augmentations.

Now to start another game and get pummeled again...

Sometimes you roll that natural 20. It helps to remember these times when you're sitting in an asteroid field with your shields hacked and an auto-scout with 2 drones regulating on you.

Here's an image of a similar game I had last night on Hard with Engi A. Good times were had by all, and by all, I mean me.

Similar thing happened to me when I was playing with Stealth B. Very early on I got myself shields and was doing pretty good untill I found Flak II in sector 3 I upgraded my weps as fast as I could and in sector 4 I bought wep. preigniter. What an insane combo. I flied thru the rest of the game and only took 3 dmg total. I was so powerfull I killed the boss in 2 volleys! Unfortunateely 1 rocket hit me in the third phase so ot wasnt a perfect victory But I got a high score so yay. I think that if you can get the preigniter with the stealth B it instantly becomes one of the best ships in the game.
