Live Action FTL?

I'm trying to make a live action FTL short film, I know adobe after effects quite well, and I have some really great ideas(at least I think they are!) on how to animate the space. FTL has beautiful backdrops, I'll do my best to create something similar.
and the FTL jump look. Sort of a combination of the titanfall warpy look, and stargate universe's blur, bright, and color flowing around the ship, but much more vibrant.

Can't tell you the script because I don't want to ruin the surprise, but I'll tell you it's an action comedy. Two episode series about 5 minutes each.

I'm currently learning 3DSmax, but it is a whole other animal from after effects, and it's kicking my butt! If any 3D artists are interested in making a Kestrel that I can import into element 3D for the short please let me know!

I'm pretty sure there are already some 3D Kestrel models out there. Might try asking the artists if you can make use of one of them?

Trust me Kieve!I've been looking! haha I saw a few screenshots of one, but it was super super basic anyway.
I haven't given up yet though!

I use Maya (try it out if you can, I was a 3ds max zealot until I used Maya for like two minutes, upon which I converted to Maya zealotry) but it's easy to export in 3ds usable formats. No texturing skills here, at least no *good* texturing skills, but I can certainly model and UV map a good looking Kestral if you'd like!

Backlit Avenger, (great name btw! I'm curious what the blacklit part is about?)
I hadn't thought about Maya, for some reason I felt like it was more for human shapes. I watched a video on someone using maya, and just the keyboard shortcuts alone look way more convenient.

Having said that... haha 3D modeling is probably going to be a slow frustrating process till I get down the basics.
If you have the time to make a kestrel model you'd be my new best friend! And I'd of course give you credit in the short film. (feel free to make up whatever title you'd like for yourself and I'll put that in there!)

I've seen a few videos on texturing, and that seems more like something my style, so no worries on that!

Update on live action short!

Everything except the 3d models and sounds were created inside after effects. Stars, nebula, dust particles, etc.
I'm going to redo the laser, add a little more camera shake, and a few more effects. Also replace the ships with FTL ones of course! But this is basically the choreography for a scene from the short.

UPDATE NUMBER 2!
I've gone from just testing and creating assets to making the title sequence!
I'm naming the short "FTL "For The Lucky", because that's how I feel whenever I'm doing good in this game. ;)

Anybody excited yet? comments? Questions?

A few things, actually.
One, you must credit Subset games at some point in the video or in the description.
Two, I have no actual idea of WHAT is planned or what COULD be done in this 'live action' or '3D' short film, so I'm not exactly excited.

Of course I'll credit Subset games, hopefully Justin Ma and Matthew Davis don't mind me making a video with their game! I looked for an official email to ask them, but judging from there FAQ, they are ok with youtube monetized let's plays, and the like. (if you read this guys, and have a sec between releasing the expansion and ipad version, to confirm you are ok with this, I'd appreciate it!)

As to what it's about I'll give you some more details, it'll be about 5 minutes long for the first one. Action and comedy, referencing the challenges of FTL. It'll be a mix of the 3d animation, and a live action cockpit type thing. If I had a budget, I'd love to create a whole ship interior, but I'm just doing this for fun, and practice. (especially practicing maya, 3d still confuses my brain!)

What I don't like when I see games adapted to movies is they don't really follow what made the game great! So my goal even with no budget is to do my best to capture what makes FTL so fun and engaging.
